Essential Clothing for Climbing Mount Everest
Layering System for 8,848 m
Everest demands a modular, tested layering system managing extreme cold (−40°C/F), wind (100+ mph), intense UV, and exertion/ moisture. Every item must be lightweight, compressible, and redundant.
Base Layer (Wicking)
- Top & bottom: Merino wool or synthetic (Patagonia Capilene, Icebreaker, Smartwool)
- Weight: Light (150–200 g/m²) for climbing; mid for camp
- No cotton — retains moisture → hypothermia risk
Mid Layer (Insulation)
- Fleece jacket/pants: Polartec Power Grid, R1/R2
- Lightweight down/synthetic vest: Core warmth without bulk
- Expedition-weight fleece or grid fleece for rest stops
Insulating Layer (High Loft)
- Down suit (one-piece) OR down jacket + pants: 800+ fill power, 250–350 g fill
- Brands: Feathered Friends, Mountain Equipment, Rab, PHD, Marmot
- Synthetic alternative: PrimaLoft Gold, Climashield (wetter performance)
Shell Layer (Weather Protection)
- Hardshell jacket & pants: Gore-Tex Pro, eVent, Pertex Shield AP
- Features: Helmet-compatible hood, pit zips, harness-compatible pockets, RECCO reflector
- Bib pants preferred — no gap at waist
