Can You Still Exchange Dutch Guilders for Euros?
No. The exchange period for Dutch guilders (NLG) to euros (EUR) ended permanently on January 1, 2007.
Timeline
- Jan 1, 1999: Euro launched (electronic). Fixed rate: 1 EUR = 2.20371 NLG.
- Jan 1, 2002: Euro cash introduced. Guilder cash circulated alongside until Jan 28, 2002.
- Jan 28, 2002 – Dec 31, 2006: Guilder banknotes exchangeable at De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) (central bank) branches.
- Jan 1, 2007: Banknote exchange ended.
- Coins: Exchange ended Jan 1, 2007 as well (originally 2005, extended).
Current Status
- Guilders are no longer legal tender.
- DNB will not exchange them for euros.
- They have only numismatic/collector value (rare notes/coins may exceed face value).
- Estimated ~€500M in guilders never exchanged (mostly lost, hoarded, souvenirs).
If you find guilders, they are souvenirs, not currency.
