Can Pre-2005 Turkish Lira Notes and Coins Still Be Used?

No. The old Turkish Lira (TRL) was demonetized after the 2005 redenomination (1,000,000 TRL = 1 New Turkish Lira – YTL, later just TRY).

• Transition Period: 2005–2015 (extended) allowed exchange at Central Bank branches.
• Current Status: Exchange window closed. Old notes/coins have no legal tender value.
• Collector Value: Some pre-2005 banknotes (especially high denominations, rare series) have numismatic value to collectors.

If you hold old TRL, consult a numismatist or auction house. For transactions in Turkey, only current TRY (2009-series onward) is accepted.
