While U.S. dollars are widely accepted in the Maldives, it's not the official currency. The official currency of the country is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). It's advisable to exchange some of your dollars to local currency when visiting the Maldives, as some transactions, especially those outside tourist areas, may only be conducted in MVR. You can easily exchange currencies at banks, official currency exchange counters, and some resorts and hotels.
