UAE Coins: Designs, Denominations, and Cultural Symbols (2006 Series)

The United Arab Emirates issues coins in Emirati dirham (AED). The current circulating series (introduced 2006) features four denominations — each blending heritage motifs with the UAE coat of arms.

Design Philosophy

• Obverse: Rotating heritage symbols — water (falaj), trade (camel), culture (falcon), maritime (dhow)
• Reverse: Standardized — denomination + "United Arab Emirates" in Arabic (English on some issues)
• Center: UAE coat of arms (golden falcon, flag shield, seven stars = seven emirates)

Production & Usage

• Minted by Central Bank of the UAE
• 1 dirham = 100 fils (fils coins: 25, 50 fils — rarely used)
• Dirham pegged: 1 USD = 3.6725 AED (since 1997)
• Coins circulate widely — vending, parking, tips, small retail

Collector Notes

• Pre-2006 series (1973, 1989) had different designs — collectible
• Commemorative issues: Expo 2020, Golden Jubilee, space mission (Hope Probe)
• No circulating 50-dirham or 1-dirham banknote replacement coins
