Instructions

  1. Preparing for Your Trip

    • 1

Obtain an updated and valid passport. You can purchase your passport at a local Secretary of State branch or local passport distributor (see References below for the locator).

    • 2

Register with your nearest U.S embassy (this is optional). This will allow you to obtain security and recently updated travel information about South Africa.

    • 3

Get an updated vaccination report for the area you are visiting. You may be required to present your yellow World Health Organization vaccination record or other proof of the vaccination. This is to prevent the spread of yellow fever.

    Planning Your Trip

    • 4

Visit a local travel agent for cheap booking packages when flying to South Africa. You may also be able to get a deal on hotel rooms if combined with your flight package.

    • 5

Browse through a travel booking website service to compare prices that you recieved from your travel agency, or if you prefer booking online (see References), search for "South Africa" when browsing the website to compare prices on car rentals, flights, and hotel prices.

    • 6

Plan and book your trip to South Africa by using an online service or your travel agent.

    In the Country

    • 7

Keep very little cash on you at all times. When travelling to a foreign country, the risk of losing your possessions can disrupt your entire visit---so take precautions when travelling in unknown areas.

    • 8

Carry a cell phone on you at all time in case of an emergency. Mobile phones are available for rental through various kiosks in South Africa.

    • 9

Avoid scams at ATMs and do not allow "help" or "assistance" from anyone, as credit card fraud is common among tourists visiting South Africa. Also be sure to lock all car doors anytime your vehicle is unattended as car jackings and car theft is a high crime in South Africa.
