What Is Intermediate Directions?

The intermediate directions are northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest. They are also called ordinal and intercardinal directions. They are the directions in between the cardinal directions (north, south, east and west) on a compass.
  1. Primary

    • The primary intermediate (also ordinal and/or intercardinal) directions are northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest. These directions are located directly between the cardinal directions of north, south, east and west on a compass rose.

    Secondary

    • The secondary intermediate directions are north-northeast, north-northwest, south-southeast and south-southwest. These directions are between the cardinal directions and the primary intermediate directions on a compass rose.

    Uses

    • The intermediate directions, along with the cardinal directions, are used regularly in a wide variety of circumstances. They are featured on compasses and maps. Drivers, pilots and others use them regularly to find and follow travel routes.
