Windsock Directions

A windsock is a tool used to indicate wind direction and strength. These devices are used at airports, harbors, and around homes and gardens. The device is typcially made of lightweight nylon and is cone-shaped. Both sides of the windsock are open, allowing the wind to flow through the sock and push it up as the wind velocity increases. A windsock is easily made in a home workshop and takes approximately one to two hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the fabric on a flat surface, and draw a large circle, at least 3 feet in diameter. Use straight edge to dissect the circle, and draw lines radiating through it so it looks like a pizza with three equal slices.

    • 2

Cut out the three "slice" sections and set them next to the sewing machine. Run the cut edges of the fabric under a flame to melt the ends and prevent fraying.

    • 3

Assemble the three sections so they form a cone. Sew the sections together, leaving the large end of the cone open. The result is a closed cone with the tip being narrow and sewn shut.

    • 4

Clip the narrow end of the cone open. As a general rule, cut down a minimum of 2 inches, but a maximum of 5 inches. Do not leave it closed as this prevents the wind from pushing the sock up and indicate direction.

    • 5

Install two grommets into the large end of the windsock with the snap tool. Thread 5-millimeter nylon cord through the grommets, so the windsock may be hung like a flag.

    • 6

Hang the windsock from weather vanes, high poles or roof tops using the nylon cord. Make sure it is parallel to the ground like a flag.
