How to Plan a Trip to Wildwood, New Jersey

The Wildwoods are a series of beach communities located at the very foot of New Jersey's much admired and much visited Jersey shore area. Wildwood itself lies in the center of the communities and has a great deal to offer any tourist. A trip to this small but attractive town can be a great way to escape the summer heat and see one of the East Coast's most popular regions.

Make hotel reservations. If you are planning a trip during the summer, make reservations at least a month in advance. Summers at Wildwood are quite popular. At the height of the busy season, hotel rooms can be quite hard to come by without advanced planning. Wildwood is famed for many motels with a 1950s or Do-Wop style. The Do-Wop style incorporates bright colors, heavy use of neon signage and fanciful details such as large plastic palm trees and eye-catching geometric shapes.

Decide on transportation options to Wildwood. Wildwood can be easily reached by car. Take the Garden State Parkway to Route 47. Route 47 turns into West Rio Grande Avenue and then into Ocean Avenue. If you are coming from abroad, you can fly into a nearby airport such as the one in Atlantic City and then drive to Wildwood. Wildwood lies about a 5-hour drive from New York City and about 2 hours from Philadelphia. Visitors can also take a New Jersey Transit bus to a bus terminal in the middle of the town.

Figure out how you want to get around while in Wildwood. Many of Wildwood's attractions are located right next to each other. Visitors can spend much of their time within a three-block walk of the boardwalk. A car is useful if you plan to visit other nearby attractions such as Cape May.

Settle on a time frame to visit. Summer is by far the most popular time to visit Wildwood. Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start of the season and Labor Day the end of it. Visitors also come during early spring and late fall to enjoy the sea breezes and admire the local architecture. Summer time is the most expensive time to visit Wildwood but it is also the time when all attractions are open. Save money during the summer by avoiding a visit during around the Fourth of July. Hotel rates can nearly double during this week.

Make a list of attractions that you would like to see. Wildwood has a boardwalk that runs for more than 2 miles. On one side of the boardwalk you'll find restaurants offering fast food and fresh seafood, carnivals and arcades and well as fun activities such as miniature gold. On the other side you'll find the beach and the ocean. You'll also find an amusement park and water park called Morey's Piers. You may also want to visit the rest of the region, including the classic multicolored houses of Cape May and slightly more sedate beaches found at North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest. Allow at least several days to see one of New Jersey's most fascinating counties.
