To have smooth experiences as a world traveler requires some preparation.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose where and how you will travel. Identify the countries or cities you will visit and decide whether you will travel by train, plane, or ship. If you're traveling for fun, avoid countries that your government lists as dangerous.

    • 2

Determine the type of travel you will do. There are so many ways to travel: backpacking, extreme sports (mountain climbing, desert trekking), study tours, language study, volunteering/internship. You may also choose to do a combination of these activities during your travels.

    • 3

Comply with the visa and travel permission requirements for each country you plan to visit. You can obtain information about visa requirements from the embassy of each country. Contact the embassy in your country or look up the information on the embassy website. American citizens can travel for pleasure to many countries for up to three months with a passport only; longer stays require a visa.

    • 4

Purchase plane, train or ship tickets. In some cases, embassy officials may require proof that you have bought a round trip ticket. Consider buying trip insurance so that the money for your tickets can be reimbursed if you are obliged to cancel your tickets.

    • 5

Pack for your trip, bringing clothing appropriate for the climate. Remember to take important identification and bank documents, including your passport, travel visa (if required), bank or credit card. Check online for suggestions about what to pack for travel to your destination. Travel guides and maps are essential for any voyage.
