How did Russian immigrants get to UK?

1. Before the Russian Revolution:

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, some wealthy Russians settled in the UK for various reasons, such as education, investment, and trade.

- Many were attracted to the perceived stability and prosperity of Britain.

2. Post-WWI and Russian-Civil War

- Thousands of Russians fled their homeland during the Bolshevik Revolution and subsequent Civil War from 1917 to 1923. Many of these exiles sought refuge in Western European countries, including the UK.

- These immigrants included military officers, intellectuals, aristocrats, and political dissidents fleeing persecution by the Bolshevik regime.

- Many found themselves marginalized as exiles in various countries they ended up, while a fraction eventually settled in Britain.

3. Second World War:

- During World War II, some Russians arrived in the UK after having served in mixed Allied formations and later chose to remain in Britain.

4. Post-Soviet era:

- Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, a new wave of Russian immigrants arrived in the UK seeking greater opportunity, economic and political freedoms.

- The UK Government's "London Initiative" in the 1990s particularly attracted professionals in finance, banking, and business-related services to London (referred to as 'Londongrad ').
