The Chinese government requires a valid passport and visa for all U.S. citizens wishing to enter the country. A visa must be obtained through Chinese embassies or consulates; they cannot be acquired upon arrival.
Individuals traveling through China with an expectation of remaining there less than 24 hours are exempt from requiring a passport provided they do not leave the airport. Also, U.S. citizens are exempt from the visa requirement when traveling to Hong Kong and staying for fewer than 90 days.
There are eight types of visas, including tourist, business and student visas. The tourist visa is usually valid for a period of 90 days.
The Chinese government requires that visa applications be made in person. A friend, relative or travel/visa agent can also be utilized.
Visa applicants must have six months of validity remaining on their passport and at least one blank page. The visa application, a recent 2-inch by 2-inch photo and all applicable fees must be submitted as well.
