What Type of Electrical Adapters Are Needed for European Outlets?

Electrical outlets vary around the world. European countries are all operating at between 220 and 250 volts, with the majority at 240 volts; American outlets are 120 volts. Most European outlets --- except Ireland and the United Kingdom --- fit type C plugs. A type C plug fits into a type E, F, J, K or N socket.
  1. Type C

    • Type C is the most common outlet used in Europe. It is sometimes called the "Europlug." It is not grounded and includes two rounded 0.157-inch pins. It is 250 volts and widely used in all of Europe.

The type C plug can be used in Type E, Type F, Type J, Type K and Type L outlets. It can also be forced to work with Type D and Type G sockets.

    Types D & G

    • Types D and G outlets are used in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Type D outlet is used in the U.K. and its former colonies. It has three round pins that are in a triangular formation. It is rated at 250 volts. The Type G also has a three-pin design with triangular formation. The pins are not round but rectangular. The type G plug contains a fuse inside it. This outlet is not compatible with type C plugs.

    Type E

    • Type E outlets are used in France. Type E plugs are also used in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Type E looks much like the Type C except the socket has a ground pin that sticks out and goes into a hole in the plug. It is compatible with type C plugs.

    Type F

    • Type F outlets are used in Germany. The Type F socket has two small grounding clips on the side. The plug has two indentations for those clips. The Type F is found in: Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Ukraine. It is compatible with type C plugs.

    Type J

    • Type J outlets are used in Switzerland and no where else. The Type J looks similar to the Type C except that it has a small hole for a ground pin slightly below and between the two main prongs. It is compatible with type C plugs.

    Type K

    • Type K outlets are used in Denmark. Type K plugs are used only in Denmark and have a semi circular ground outlet. Type K plugs have a semi circle pin for that ground. Type K outlets are compatible with type C plugs.

    Type L

    • Type L outlets are used in Italy. Type L outlets are exactly like Type C outlets except there is another identical pin in the center of the two main pins for ground. They are compatible with type C plugs.
