Basic identification is a requirement of most forms of travel. Whether traveling domestically or internationally, by bus or by plane, identification is often required when paying and/or boarding. Be sure to have a driver's license, state-issued ID and/or passport. The Department of Motor Vehicles can issue state-issued identification, driver's licenses and permits. Leave ample time if acquiring one for the first time.
If traveling internationally, a passport is necessary. Make sure the passport is up to date and in order before departing. In order to obtain a passport visit the local passport office or certain post office branches. Rush passports can be obtained for an extra fee. Since not all countries have friendly relations, it is also a good idea to research the political situation ahead of time.
Some international travel requires a visa depending on the country of origin and the destination and length of visit. Visit that country's website or embassy to find out and apply for a visa if necessary. If a visa is necessary, leave ample time prior to the trip as it often takes four to six weeks. A passport is necessary to obtain a visa and must be left at the visa office while they issue and affix the visa.
One of the most important travel documents is the ticket. Frequently tickets are no longer issued ahead of time and can be printed at home or at a kiosk. If this is the case it is a good idea to bring the confirmation number and the credit card, if any, used to purchase the ticket. For international travel, proof of a return ticket is often necessary as well.
For some international travel, an immunization card or immunization records may be required. In these cases be sure to have necessary immunizations up to date and documented by a doctor. Research if this is necessary ahead of time.
It can be helpful to have photocopies of all important travel documents. Make photocopies of identification, passport, visa, tickets, insurance card and any other important documents. Take a copy and leave a copy at home with a trusted person. If any documents are lost during travel, the photocopies can greatly help recover the items. Additionally, it may be a good idea to write down credit card numbers and their associated phone numbers; should a wallet go missing it helps immensely to have this information.
