Passport Types

Passports are required for identification during international travel. There are many types of passports and they all have different purposes. The United States offers different types of passports for its citizens depending on their destination or purpose for travel outside the country.
  1. Passport Card

    • The passport card allows traveling by land or air to Mexico, Canada or several countries in the Caribbean Sea where, previously, a passport was not required. It does not allow traveling other places,

    Diplomatic and Official Passport

    • A diplomatic passport is issued to diplomats who are residing in other countries. This passport can also be issued to a diplomat's dependents. This passport does not remove the need for visas by these people and it does not assure diplomatic immunity.

The official passport or service passport is issued to government employees and their dependents. These are usually only valid for five years.

    Family and Collective Passports

    • Family passports may be issued for a nuclear family, meaning a mother, father and children. This makes it possible for entire families to travel together under one passport. One of the adults is usually the passport holder, and this person may travel alone, but none of the other family members may travel with it without the holder.

A collective passport is issued to an entire group of people traveling together.

    Refugee Travel Documents

    • Refugee travel documents are issued when a person seeks asylum in a foreign country. These people are unable to obtain passports from their own country nor do other countries issue passports to non-citizens. Refugee travel documents allow a person to travel, and acts like a passport, so they may seek asylum.
