Is There a Fast Way to Replace a Passport Yourself?

The answer is "Yes." If your passport was lost or stolen, there are two ways to replace a passport yourself -- one is from the comfort of your home, the other one can be done abroad. If you are traveling overseas, losing your passport can surely be an inconvenience. But you can easily and quickly obtain a temporary passport to return home.

At Home

  Need a new passport? Bring all official IDs at hand.
  
  Gather all the official identification documents you might have: birth certificates, military ID card, regular ID card, Driver's License, etc. In short, gather all documents that might help prove your identity. In addition, to make the process of replacing your passport quicker, have forms DS-11 and DS-64 filled out and ready, as well as the necessary passport-sized pictures.

  Report your passport as lost or stolen. First, you must call the official toll free number 1-877-487-2778 -- TTY 1-888-874-7793 -- which works Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET. Form DS-64, titled "Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport," will be the official report you will take with you to the Passport Agency.

  Check the resources section to find your closest Passport Agency.
  
  Present your documents in person at the nearest Passport Agency, together with all the forms of official ID you may have, 2 passport sized photographs, and the application fee.

  To receive the passport in the mail as soon as possible, make sure you request the "Expedite" service at the Passport Agency, which will incur an extra fee on top of the passport fee.
Outside the United States

  Gather any documents you may have with you while abroad -- including driver's license, ID card, military ID card -- in short, anything that might help prove your identity.

  Forms DS-64 and DS-11 are available online.
  
  Fill out the DS-64 Form, titled "Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport." Head to the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, and present all documents in person: DS-11 Form, DS-64 Form, any ID that you might have to prove your identity, two passport-sized pictures, and the application fee.

  The U.S. Embassy or Consular office will issue you an Emergency Passport, which will enable you to return home. This is done quickly, and in most cases within 24 hours. If your departure date is not imminent, you may apply for a regular passport, which will be issued to you within 10 to 14 days.
