Efficient Route Planning

When planning a trip in the family car, or when running errands around town, sometimes it's necessary to linger and take your time over the route. But if there's an exciting or important destination waiting at the other end, or if you hope to save gas, it's better to get through your trip as quickly and efficiently as possible (and without missing any stops along the way). Efficiency will save time, money and hassle, and will help ensure a smooth journey.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Decide where you want to go and write down all destinations; make sure none are left out. Ask yourself if any stops are excess to requirements: do you really need to go to the pen store across town if there's one less than a block away from where you live?

    • 2

Condense your errands into as few stops as possible. Although a shopping mall may be further away, the convenience of having so many stores in the same area should not be overlooked. Plan the most logical route that connects each destination so that time isn't wasted.

    • 3

Consider the time of day and traffic conditions. Is it better to drive through the heart of downtown during rush hour? Avoid high-traffic areas as much as possible. If your destination is in a high-traffic area, consider the best times for arrival and departure.

    Research

    • 4

Using an interface such as Google Maps or MapQuest, type in the addresses of the destinations and get a general idea of where everything is located. Print or draw a map to help determine the most efficient route.

    • 5

Plan your return trip. Is it best to use the same route? Is there another route that will allow for quicker travel? Sometimes using a different route to get home can save you time and gas.

    • 6

Consider using a GPS navigator--a handy tool that guides the driver along on a chosen route. If using a GPS navigator, ensure that it follows the route that's already been planned. (GPS technology must be paired with common sense!)
