Directions for a Rand McNally Road Trip Planner

For long distance driving and adventurous road trips, the name Rand McNally conjures images of large road atlases and maps. Today, Rand McNally has gone digital and offers trip planning and mapping via its website and the "Road Trip Planner." Using the feature is free and is done with an Internet connection. Rand McNally allows customization on your trip route, allowing you to bypass toll-roads, add points of interest, or POIs, and even request specific hotels or food chains along your proposed journey. At present the Rand McNally Road Trip Planner is for roads in the United States and Canada.

      Direct the Internet browser to the Rand McNally Driving Directions website. Click the "Plan a Trip" option along the menu bar.

      Select the "Maps and Directions" under the drop-down menu. Enter your starting address or city and your destination. Click "Trip Options" to make multi-leg routes. Enter the additional destinations into the drop-down entry fields.

      Customize the trip by clicking "Trip Options" once more and clicking the choices you wish. Options include seeing results in miles or kilometers, avoiding toll roads, shortest distance, shortest time, avoiding highways and showing accumulated distance with each leg.

      Click "Find a Hotel" to select hotels along your route. Add POIs via entering options such as national parks, campgrounds or tourist attractions along your proposed routes.

      Print out the route by clicking the "Print" option on the website. Send the route to your email account or to a smartphone or iPad by selecting the "Send" function and entering your email or chat addresses.
