Select the smallest bag possible to carry the items you need for your trip. If you are going to be doing a lot of walking at your destination, consider using a large backpack as a suitcase.
Pack clothes tightly into small plastic bags. Shoes should be placed facing each other heel to toe and wrapped in a separate bag.
Place wrapped clothes in the bottom of your bag or suitcase. Throw in an empty bag for future dirty laundry.
Pack medicines and first-aid supplies in one bag or compartment and toiletries in another. Put potentially leaky items in sealed plastic bags and buy travel-size versions of your toiletries when possible.
Add books and any professional materials or electronic gear you may need.
Close and lift the bag to determine if it is too heavy to carry comfortably for several city blocks. If so - and if you're going to be on the move a lot while traveling - remove anything that can be bought, rented or borrowed at your destination.
