Prepare for warm summers with cool nights and possible showers. Light clothes that are easy to layer will serve you well. Include khakis, capri pants, cotton T-shirts, linen shirts and a few sweaters.
Leave the shorts at home. In fact, garments that reveal skin are inappropriate for Roman churches, and are rarely worn around town.
Pack sunglasses to protect your eyes from the intense sun rays.
Bring an umbrella when visiting during summer and fall. A raincoat is wise, especially in October, which is Rome's wettest month.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, as there are numerous sights to take in on foot.
Bring wool, flannel and fleece garments to layer when visiting November through March. A medium-weight coat will keep you plenty warm during the winter.
Take traditional suits and dress shoes when visiting Rome on business. Women dress conservatively, and hose and pumps are expected. Women keep skirts knee-length.
Think dressy casual for dining out or enjoying the opera. Women will impress in a nice dress, while men might opt for slacks and a button-down shirt.
