Packing for a weekend trip can get out of hand if you don't have a clear plan. Bulky, overpacked suitcases can hinder a smooth weekend getaway. On the other hand, missing an important piece of clothing or toiletry can be equally dampening on plans. Find out as much as you can about what you'll be doing for the two or three days, and make a concise list of necessities.
Shoes take up room in luggage, so wear the shoes that will work best for the entire weekend and pack one extra pair for an evening out.
Leave the big shampoo bottles and cans of hairspray behind. Opt for travel-size bottles that fit in one cosmetic bag. Stick to one shade of makeup and one bottle of lotion or fragrance.
Pack only clothes that you will wear for the weekend. Make the decision about which outfits you'll wear for each activity before you leave home. Don't bring alternate outfits if you want to keep your luggage light and easy to maneuver.
Purchase a small pill case and bring only the number of pills or vitamins you need for the number of days you'll be gone.
Clean out your purse and wallet so you aren't carrying documents and business cards for which you'll have no use. Make room to pocket souvenirs, maps and tickets.
Take only the credit cards you plan to use. You don't need your gas credit cards if you'll be on a ship or your department store cards if you're going out of town. Bring one picture ID, cash and traveler's checks, and leave the big checkbook and other identifications behind.
Put a cloth carrying case in your suitcase to bring home shopping purchases and to use while shopping or for other activities.
