Cruising for the first time is an experience that offers both adventure and relaxation on the sea and will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. Cruise ships offer sleeping accommodations, dining, entertainment, adventure and much more without you having to leave the ship. While cruising for the first time can be exciting, planning a cruise for the first time without spending a fortune can be stressful. Much of this stress can be alleviated by understanding the basics of affordable cruising.
Plan your cruise to a Caribbean destination during the offseason. The Caribbean, at that time of the year, will give you the most affordable rates. Plan to cruise between the months of September and April to avoid higher summer vacation prices. Do not book your cruise during the holidays, as prices tend to spike during this time as well.
Contact local travel agents for quotes. Ask for prices on interior cabins, as cabins with windows will cost more. Ask if there are any discounts available for any organization or clubs that you are a member of. Call the cruise line's direct booking number and ask for prices on the same trip. Compare the cruise line's prices to the travel agent's, and choose the most affordable option.
Pay for your cruise with a payment plan. Pay the required deposit and initial fees during the booking process. Make a minimum payment every month until the deadline by which the cruise must be completely paid. You can pay the cruise all at one time, but payment plans are easier to afford on a budget.
Apply for a U.S. Passport Card if you're traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda. The card, available only if you're visiting these places, will be more affordable than the standard passport book. Pick up a passport application from your local post office. Complete the application and attach a copy of your birth certificate. Schedule an appointment with the post office to turn it in and have your photo taken. Allow at least six weeks for your passport card to arrive by mail.
Create a budget for what you will spend on board the ship. Expect all your meals to be included with your cruise. Sodas and alcoholic beverages will cost extra. Purchase a soda card if you will be drinking a lot of soda, as this will provide you with unlimited soda for a one-time fee. Budget how much you will spend on souvenirs and drinks. Monitor your spending to not go over budget.
Avoid shore excursions while at the ship's port, as they can be expensive. Plan to walk around the port and enjoy the area instead of paying for activities. Attend the free shows and entertainment aboard the ship instead of paying for expensive entertainment at the port.
