How do I Register a Camera Before Traveling to Mexico?

Failure to declare a camera with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) prior to departing for Mexico can lead to questioning at the border upon re-entry into the U.S. The CBP will not charge you a fee during re-entry if you can prove you purchased the camera in the U.S. with a receipts or equipment insurance, provided you have those records on hand. If you don't have proof you purchased the camera in the U.S., register your camera prior to departure at your local CBP office or with the CBP at the international airport of your departure, to avoid confusion over ownership and duty fees.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects Taken Abroad (CBP Form 4457) online from the CBP website, or from your local CBP office or international airport (see Resources).

    • 2

List your camera on the form, as well as any additional camera equipment, and write a brief description. Show your equipment to the CBP officer to confirm the certificate of registration.

    • 3

Keep the form in your belongings with a copy of your passport. Should a U.S. Customs officer question you about your camera, present the form and he will check the serial number to ensure the form's authenticity.
