How to Adjust Travel Trailer Brakes

Travel trailers are a great alternative to the car road trip. New designs are comfortable and roomy. That room equates to weight, so travel trailers have brake systems to help you travel safely. Most travel trailers use electric brake systems, by which an electrical current from the vehicle activates an electromagnet in the trailer brake. A routine maintenance item for travel trailers is a brake adjustment, which you can accomplish in about an hour.

Block one trailer tire with chocks. Jack up the opposite side of the trailer with a floor jack and support the trailer with jack stands. Spin the tire on the trailer in the direction of normal rotation. If the tire does not turn the brake shoes may be frozen to the drum. You may need to remove the brake drum and perform a visual inspection for damage before performing any brake adjustment.

Look on the back of the wheel hub. You will find a rubber plug in a hole at the bottom-rear. Remove the plug and insert the brake adjustment tool in the hole.

Brake adjustment tools come in different shapes and are sold in automotive parts stores.

Turn the tire in the forward direction. Use the brake adjustment tool to turn the adjustment wheel, often referred to as a "star wheel," until the brake shoes drag on the brake drum. Turn the adjustment wheel in the opposite direction until the brakes lightly drag on the drum.

Replace the brake adjustment rubber plug. Inspect the rear of the wheel for grease. If you find grease the rear bearing seal may need to be replaced. You will need to remove the brake drum to do this.

    • 5

Lower the trailer, chock the wheel you adjusted and jack up the other side of the trailer. Adjust the brake as you did the first one.
