Can you transfer your Maryland home improvement license to another company?

In the State of Maryland, home improvement contractor licenses are issued to individual contractors, not to companies. Therefore, individual licenses are non-transferable. However, if you are the owner or manager of a home improvement company and you want to transfer the company to another person or entity, you may do so by:

1. Selling or transferring the company to a new owner or partners.

2. Closing the existing company and opening a new one under the new ownership.

3. Forming a new company and merging the existing one into the new one.

4. Transferring the ownership of the company to a trust or other legal entity.

In any case, you will need to update the MHIC license application with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission to reflect the change of ownership. You may also need to obtain a new MHIC license for the new company, depending on the type of business structure you choose.
