What is the Jasper sea?

The Jasper Sea (also called Jaspis) was, according to the geographer Pomponius Mela, the name the ancient world gave to the Caspian Sea. Mela noted the Caspian Sea as being of a green colour, and named the sea as the Jasper Sea.
