Several diving companies offer week-long packages aboard either a sail boat or motor boat. The boats have amenities comparable to 4- or 5- star hotels, including air conditioning, private rooms, private showers with hot fresh water, dining room, library and entertainment center. Each day offers a new dive site, and the itinerary includes two to four dives and an occasional land adventure. Rates include accommodation, meals and diving; airfare and gear rental not included. As of July 2010, rates start at $4,400. Live aboard cruises are for experienced divers only.
Island-based dive trips are perfect for intermediate or advanced divers. These multi-day packages can last from four to nine days. Days are spent diving at some of the best spots on the central islands; after sunset, more sightseeing is available near the hotel. Packages include a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station, a snorkeling trip with the penguins at the island of Bartolome, and a visit to a giant turtle habitat. Rates include accommodations, dives, full gear rentals and some meals; airfare not included. As of July 2010, rates start at $2,200.
Daily dive trips can be combined with other sightseeing or activities on the Galapagos Islands, or added as a part of a naturalist cruise. Open to all skill levels, as dive sites offer something for everyone. Some dive spots are shared with live aboard cruise divers, enhancing the experience. Daily dive trips depart from the Santa Cruz Dive Center and from the San Cristobal Dive Center. Rates range from $140 to $200 and include full gear rentals, dive guide and lunch.
