Alaska Cruise and Kayak Trips

Seeing the sights from a distance in Alaska is easy. Take a train ride or sail in on a major cruise liner. But if you really want to get up close and personal, the best route to take is on a small cruise ship excursion that includes kayak trips to get you close to nature. These tours take visitors into secluded inlets, get them close to glaciers, and even let them keep up with a traveling whale pod.
  1. Alaska on the Home Shore

    • Take a kayak adventure tour on the Home Shore.

The Home Shore, a rugged classic wooden boat once used for the fishing industry, now takes visitors on adventure travel tours of scenic Alaska. At 62 feet in length, the Home Shore provides a comforting oasis for guests, complete with staterooms, two bathrooms with a shower, a dinette, lounge, and a library. The boat is heated and provides a quiet trip due to a 110 V inverter rather than a loud generator. During the tour, guests are provided with custom-planned kayak tours ranging from beginner to experienced. Kayaks are supplied or guests can bring their own. Tours can be guided or guests can venture out on their own and be picked up by the boat later in the day. Tidal sloughs, sea arches, and barrier islands are a few of the natural sights on the trip. Because the tour takes visitors to serene, secluded areas, bears, humpback whales, sea otters, and soaring eagles may be spotted.

    National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions

    • Get up close and personal with a whale pod.

In 2004, National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions came together to encourage travelers to see out-of-the-way places. World-renowned National Geographic scientists and researchers are on board to educate passengers about the wildlife and the environment they are seeing. Two of the boats, the National Geographic Sea Bird and the National Geographic Sea Lion, sail to Alaska. Accommodating between 48 and 62 passengers, their small size allows them to reach destinations that larger ships can't. Each boat is sailed by experienced captains, and has the feeling of a large yacht with private accommodations and outside windows, a lounge, library, and full service menu. An undersea specialist and doctor travel on every trip. Spontaneous trips can be made by kayak to see icy walls, whale pods, and other wildlife. Kayaks are provided along with a five-person expedition team to narrate.
