Why does a traditional roller coaster ride begin by pulling you up hill?

To build up potential energy.

As the train is pulled to the top of the hill, its potential energy increases. This potential energy is then converted into kinetic energy as the train rolls down the hill. Because there is no propulsion device that keeps it climbing at the top of the hill, potential energy is the energy source which allows it to get going at the right speed as it begins the exciting first descent of the ride.
