Winter Activities in Silverthorne, CO

Silverthorne, Colorado, is a small town located within Summit County. As of the 2000 census, there were 3,196 people who called Silverthorne home. Although the town is small, an array of activities abound throughout the area. Silverthorne offers many recreation opportunities during the winter. Anyone can participate in Silverthorne's wintertime classics involving sledding, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and trail walking.
  1. Sledding

    • Rainbow Park has a sledding hill perfect for families to play together. This is Silverthorne's largest public park surrounded with seven acres of green space. Designed as a multipurpose field, the park contains a skateboard park, basketball court, children's play area and picnic shelter for a wintertime picnic. Parking is near the hill, and is accessed by way of a driveway behind the Recreation Center.

      The sledding hill offers an assortment of elevations and peaks for a variety of fun. The hill wraps around the park, which is an ideal place to create snowmen or throw snowballs. The Recreation Center offers public washrooms, a warm lobby and a variety of snacks during break time.

    Snowmobiling

    • Keystone Snowmobiling Tours and Rentals (keystonesnowmobiling.com) offers an adventurous high countryside escape, with an infinite source of snowfields and pastures to explore. Snowmobile riders can navigate 50 miles of groomed trails and more than 55,000 acres of back-country terrain. Designate a ride with a guide or rent your own snowmobile.

      Keystone offers three instructed snowmobile tours and unguided snowmobile rentals to visitors of any ability and experience level. The High Adventure and Performance Tour is great for steep alpine driving. The Prospector Tour is ideal for individuals, groups and families with little or no experience. All drivers must be at least 15 years of age, and children age 3 or older can ride as passengers.

    Fly Fishing

    • Cutthroat Anglers (fishcolorado.com) is a premier fly-fishing store and guide service. Located on the banks of the Blue River in Sliverthorne, Cutthroat provides year-round fly fishing adventures. Cutthroat Anglers has authorization to guide on six of the 13 Gold Medal Rivers, in addition to 11 other Colorado rivers. Wintertime is an excellent time for fly fishing, with fewer crowds and great fishing.

      The river's fishing during the winter time is limited, but the absence of warm water causes the trophy trout to extend throughout the river. During cold snow days, you can catch trophy-size trout. On warm winter days, midge hatches and small fish are easy catch.

    Nordic Skiing/Snowshoeing

    • Silverthorne's Nordic Center positioned inside Three Peaks Golf Club offers skiing and snowshoeing. The center provides impressive views of the mountains. Two paths present a variety of trails for cross country skiers and snowshoe users.

      The north side of the course provides a stimulating terrain with lots of changes in elevation. Beginners are comfortable on the south side of the course, which is flatter, but nevertheless offers plenty of variations and turns. These routes are planned for individuals with skis and snowshoes solely, so dogs are not allowed.
