Travel to sea turtle hot spots. Loggerheads nest annually at Masirah Island in Oman, as well as at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. Green sea turtles commonly congregate at Tortuguero in Costa Rica. Olive ridleys flock to La Escobilla, Oaxaca in Mexico. Flatbacks can be found in the Gulf of Papua in New Guinea.
Participate in sea-turtle ecotourism. Volunteered hours support both the wildlife and the pro-turtle groups that support them. The money you may use to fund your adventure can directly impact local sea turtle communities and fund conservation efforts. The Cozumel Marine Turtle Salvation Program, for instance, organizes "brigades," lasting one to two nights, where volunteers help hatchlings safely navigate to the water.
Time your travel according to the sea turtle nesting season. Turtles can lay eggs between May and August. Also attend to the year in which you'd like to travel; certain species, like the loggerhead, nest only once every two to three years. Get lots of rest and prepare to be active at wee hours; many sea turtle species only appear very late at night.
