How to Find Road Closures

Road closures can really affect your daily commute, especially if the detour you must take is significantly longer. Many people have set morning and nighttime driving routines and thus dislike having to deviate from them for reasons like road construction or an accident.

There are a few different ways to find out about road closures in your area such as visiting the website for your state's Department of Transportation, calling the phone number for your state's DOT or by visiting the websites of your local media outlets.

Instructions

Visit the website for the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. Click on the state where you live and then look through the list of information and links about traffic and road closures. Alternatively, you can visit your state's DOT website. Depending on which state you live in, you will want to click on either the "Travel Information" link, the "Travel" link or the "Emergency Travel" link. On the next page, click on the "Roads, Traffic and Travel," "Incident Alerts" or the "Travel Alerts" link. Review the information that comes up, which should include any road closures and detour information.

Call the phone number for your state's DOT, which can be found on their official website, in your local phone book or by dialing "411" or "0" and asking a telephone operator to connect you. Depending on your state, you will then be able to select road closure information from a list of menu prompts.

Visit the websites for your local media outlets such as your local news stations and newspaper. If there has been a major traffic accident or natural disaster that has shut down roads, these media outlets are likely to report on the incidences and continually update the public on any new developments. These news stories and articles will most likely also contain information about detours and road re-openings.

Listen to your local radio station to see if there are any accident reports or road closures. Almost all local radio stations will update listeners on road closures, especially during times of inclement weather. Many radio stations in large cities such as Los Angeles and New York City also have numerous traffic reports throughout the day to notify drivers of any heavy highway or street traffic or road closures.
