How to Find a PNR Status

Passenger Name Records are the data that airlines and train systems keep on each passenger listed for transit in their databases. In the United States and Europe, PNRs are created for issued tickets and therefore have no real status to check. Passengers use record locator numbers and ticket numbers when dealing with check-in and travel status information. In India and Pakistan, however, airlines and train systems issue PNRs for all transactions --- which include wait-listed passengers who pay in full despite not receiving a confirmed seat. As a result, passengers in South Asia often use PNR numbers to see if they have a seat or not for their upcoming transportation.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the website for Indian Railways and choose the Passenger Reservation Enquiry screen. Enter your PNR in the fields provided and click on "Get Status." This will call up your train status information and show you if your tickets are confirmed, wait-listed or RAC --- meaning you will travel two people to a berth.

Call Indian Railways' customer service center to inquire about your PNR status by telephone if the online system is not desirable to you.

    • 3

Visit the travel website you used to book your train or plane tickets. The sites that do significant business in South Asia often have PNR look-up functions on their sites and web links in their ticket receipt emails. Similarly, any IATA member travel agent throughout the world can check on airline ticket status and travel agents authorized by Indian Railways can check on PNR statuses through their computer systems.

Visit the website of the airline on which you are trying to travel. All of the Indian airlines including the newer, privately owned carriers have reservation status screens on their websites. Air India offers a PNR status look-up on its home page as well as on its Reservations Status page while Jet Air and Kingfisher have lookups on pages specific to checking PNRs.

Call your airline's customer service department and ask an agent to check your PNR status for you. Agents should be able to look them up instantly and offer you advice if you need to change or re-book tickets.
