Choose a destination for your road trip which is a pleasant drive. The bustle of city traffic can become overwhelming when you are wanting to get away. A road trip into the country can be a leisurely drive that lets you enjoy the scenic view.
Check local places of interest. With gas prices being so high, the closer to home your road trip is the better for your wallet. There are festivals and tourist spots in every state. Many newspapers offer a coming attractions column for the reading audience. See what is happening in your area.
Make any reservations you may need in advance. You can plan your road trip itinerary for the schedule you need to keep. Set aside ample time to take in all the sites.
Check the fluid levels in your car. Just because you have enough fuel to make the road trip does not mean there is enough oil or radiator coolant. You will also want to check windshield washer fluid levels. It is a wise choice to carry an extra quart of oil, a gallon of gas, and a gallon of water in your car when making a road trip.
Tell someone about your plans. You should give at least one person the route you will be taking for your road trip. If there are any problems, this gives a good starting reference to help find you.
Check for road construction which may be occurring between you and your road trip destination. You will want to find detours around the construction zones so you do not get caught up in the heavy traffic.

Use a prepaid cell phone if you do not usually have one. A prepaid phone allows you to call 911 in case of emergencies.
Take frequent breaks while driving during your road trip. You can become tired quickly while behind the wheel of a car. Keep the radio playing, roll the window down, or play a road trip game to stay awake if you find yourself tired. When it is safe to pull over to take a break then do so immediately.
Keep the vehicle free of debris while on your road trip. Accidents can occur while driving because a soda can rolled under the brake pedal. Empty your trash at the proper receptacles while on your road trip.
