Set your budget. The amount of money you are willing to spend will determine not only your destination, but the routes you take to reach your destination.
Find a map or series of maps that show the roads between your starting place and your destination. This map can be either a hard copy or electronic. Remember that neither may record construction areas.
Choose a route that will get you to your destination and back home in a timely, cost-efficient manner. Once you've picked routes that fit within this guideline, choose one that will take you to places along the way that you'd like to visit. This might include hotels you want to stay in, parks you want to visit or scenic views you'd like to see.
Pack food and clothes accordingly. Clothes should last you the entire trip, unless you plan to stop somewhere and do your laundry. You should pack as much nonperishable food as possible. This is cheaper than eating at restaurants along the way. You might consider packing a cooler and buying food from stores as you travel.
