How to Plan a Road Trip in the U.S.A.

There's something about a road trip that evokes feelings of freedom. This classic American adventure is all about taking the scenic route and the detours rather than worrying about going directly from point A to point B. On a road trip, you and your travel companions are in charge. You decide when to start and where to stop. Too much advance planning can take away from the spontaneity of a road trip, but some simple steps can ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible.

Instructions

  1. Planning Your Trip

    • 1

Identify the purpose of your trip. This will help you to decide how much advance planning will be required. If the purpose of your trip is to get away from it all with no particular destination in mind, all you really need to get started is a tank of gas. However, if the purpose of your trip is to stop at points A, B and C, more advance planning will be needed.

    • 2

Determine the style of traveling you and your companions prefer and compromise before the trip, if necessary. Some travelers like an organized trip and plan their routes, stops and hotel stays in advance. Other travelers find that level of planning too confining. They prefer the open-ended road trip, stopping at will and staying overnight wherever they are when they are too tired to drive any further.

    • 3

Do a little research into destinations and routes. At a minimum, purchase a map if you like the open-ended style of travel. If you prefer a more organized trip, research your destinations via Internet, guide books, maps, and trip planners.

Care for your vehicle in advance of your trip. Take it to a mechanic for a tune-up and ask him to check the tires, including the spare and jack, and the belts and hoses, replacing them if needed. Make sure that your vehicle's insurance, license and registration are up-to-date as well.

    • 5

Prepare for emergencies and the unexpected. Carry appropriate emergency supplies in your vehicle. A basic roadside emergency kit should include a cellular phone; first-aid kit; fire extinguisher; warning lights, hazard lights or flares; tire gauge; jack and lug wrench; foam tire sealant or portable compressor and plug kit; spare fuses; jumper cables or portable battery booster; flashlight; gloves, hand cleaner and clean rags; and an auto-club card or roadside-assistance number.

Make your vehicle comfortable. Bring along your favorite music or audio books to help pass the time. A small cooler is useful for storing beverages and snacks, and a pillow or blanket will make nap time and hotels more comfortable.
