How to Plan a Road Trip to Florida

Although snowbirds go south in the winter and college kids travel that way for spring break, Florida is a good vacation spot any time of year. With destinations all over the state, traveling by car is a great way to see Florida and visit its major cities. Tampa, Orlando and Miami, all in the southern half of the state, are loaded with year-round tourist options.

Instructions

    • 1

Select an online road trip planner to help plan your journey. AAA, Yahoo and Rand McNally, along with many other travel sites, offer trip planners that can help you foresee construction and highway closures and choose the most efficient route.

    • 2

Type your starting point into the road trip planner. For your destination, you may want to say Miami and amend your trip with stops in other cities in Florida. Or you can end your trip in Tallahassee or Jacksonville and plan your time in Florida in a separate planner because you will be stopping more often.

    • 3

Use the trip planner to find hotel, restaurant and gas stops on the trip to Florida. Because there is plenty to see in Florida, you probably will not want to stop at too many attractions on your way there, unless you need to eat, fuel up or sleep.

    • 4

Check out Florida city attractions by clicking on Rand McNally's "City Guides" or travel information and recommendations by AAA's travel writers and hotel inspectors.

    • 5

Choose the attractions you want to see and plan your budget accordingly.

    • 6

Pack your suitcases, maps and snacks, fill up the tank with gas and be on your way.
