Four primary mechanisms lift coaster trains to the first hill:

1. Chain Lift Hill: A continuous chain engages dogs under the train; motor at top pulls train up. Most common.
2. Cable Lift Hill: Steel cable replaces chain; lighter, faster, quieter (e.g., Intamin coasters).
3. Hydraulic Lift Hill: Hydraulic ram pushes a piston attached to the train; smooth, powerful (e.g., some launched coasters).
4. Linear Induction Motor (LIM) Lift Hill: Electromagnets on track induce currents in train's fins, propelling it magnetically without contact. Used for launches and lifts.

Each system offers trade-offs in speed, maintenance, cost, and ride experience.
