Cheap Quick Getaways

Need a vacation but can't afford to go far? A staycation may be your ticket to a cheap, quick getaway. Staycation is a broad term that can be defined as vacationing in your home or vacationing in your local area. Have a long weekend coming up? Don't spend the time doing chores. Instead, look around your local area for activities that can relax and refresh you.
  1. Big City Getaway

    • If you live within a two-hour drive of a large city such as San Francisco, California; Denver, Colorado or St. Louis, Missouri, considering booking a hotel room and having an inexpensive night on the town. Look on-line for the best rates for hotels or even hostels. After arriving at your hotel, ask where to find a copy of the local, free weekly newspaper. These often contain ads and coupons for discount dining. Schedule your trip around a free event, such as a free museum day, an outdoor crafts fair or a music festival.

    Local Area Getaway

    • Maybe the big city is too expensive or far away. Consider the smaller cities in your vicinity. Does a local town have a historic or lively downtown area? If so, is there a hotel or bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown? You can book a room and spend the afternoon strolling and window shopping. In the evening, enjoy dining and free live music at the local coffeehouse. If you live close to a national forest, spend a day hiking or on the water. If you have or can borrow camping gear, consider spending a night or two under the stars. The National Park Service offers free entry days several times a year.

    Home Town Getaway

    • Your budget might not extend past your city's limits. If that's the case, consider local resources. Does the local park have a barbecue area? Pack up some food and spend an afternoon grilling and chilling out on a picnic blanket. Check the local library's schedule to see what free activities it offers, such as movie nights and lectures. A local coffeehouse may have a free open mic night. Plan a different activity for each day of your vacation and keep yourself busy without spending a bundle.

    Getaway With Kids

    • Is there an amusement park in your local area? If so, plan an overnight adventure at a hotel close to the park if you have children. The kids will appreciate being able to stay until the park closes and you can relax since there's no need to rush home. The local library can also be a great resource for free children's activities. If you live near a beach, spend the day taking turns with your spouse or partner watching the kids and relaxing while enjoying a water activity.
