There are several hostels in the downtown area, including Hostel of the Rockies and the Melbourne Hotel & Hostel. They offer shared sleeping quarters and baths at an inexpensive rate. Not everything is bare bones; amenities can include a TV in each room, Internet access and bike rentals.
Economical brands such as Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, La Quinta, and Days Inn offer less expensive accommodations in a motel or hotel type setting. The Denver Metro area is very large, and many of these choices are available throughout. Because downtown Denver caters mostly to business and convention travelers, only moderate to expensive rooms are generally in this area.
According to Linda and Jim Castrone, authors of "The Insiders' Guide to Denver," tourists can get special rates at the mountain resorts in spring and fall. Downtown prices don't fluctuate much, though some hotels offer weekend specials.
