Visit Amsterdam during its off-season. Though it is colder during December through March, this is the time you will find the cheapest flights and accommodations. Attractions are open for limited hours, but the city is as charming as any other time of year.
Book flights as part of a packaged vacation. Even if you do not need accommodations, it is often cheaper to book a package deal than a flight on its own. Visit a travel agent or peruse a travel search engine to see what specials are available. You can also purchase a ticket on a budget airline. Airlines such as Virgin are no-frills which means they cuts back on items such as on-board food, drink and entertainment to reduce the cost of flights. Although it is not as comfortable as other airlines, these airlines cost less money per ticket.
Buy a Eurail pass if you are traveling by train. A Eurail pass works throughout the European Union, and gives you a discount on multiple train journeys. If you are not in Amsterdam for an extended period -- such as 10 days -- this may not be a bargain.
Book a hostel room to save money on accommodations on hotels. Hostel World provides a guide to many hostels in Amsterdam with tools to book rooms online. If hostels have extra beds, you can also book upon arrival. A hostel is different from a hotel because you can book a bed in a group room, with other travelers you do not know, or private rooms. These accommodations often include lounge and kitchen areas where you can mingle with other travelers or prepare your own food.
Apply for a discount card such as the International Student Card. The ISC provides discounts at hostels, hotels and sometimes on transportation. The specials change annually as your renew your card, but it gives you access to special deals throughout Amsterdam. This card is available through your college or online.
