Sin City can be an expensive place to visit. Mostly gone are the cheap buffets, hotel rooms and entertainment options that once were a big draw for Las Vegas. There are still deals to be had if you know where to look. Many of the casinos also offer free activities or displays to entice crowds to their properties.
Wander the Strip. This famous stretch of road that is officially known as Las Vegas Boulevard contains some of the most lavish casinos in the world. Just seeing the architecture and grandeur of the structures is entertaining in itself, but on top of that many of the properties offer free displays. At the Bellagio the fountains in the lake out front dance in time to musical selections every 15 minutes to half-hour, depending on the time of day. The volcano at the Mirage erupts every hour after dark. Pirates battle it out in front of Treasure Island four times nightly. Also check out the light and sound show called the Fremont Street Experience that takes place hourly after dark downtown.
Look in the local entertainment guides for coupons. Guides such as "Today in Las Vegas" and "What's On" offer not only a look at what's playing in Las Vegas, but also offer many coupons such as 2-for-1 tickets to some of the shows. While you aren't likely to find Cirque du Soleil discounts here you can find good deals to some of the lesser-known options on the Strip.
Play low-limit slot machines. If you have the jones for gambling but not a big budget, try your hand at some of the penny and nickel denomination one-armed bandits. While you probably will not win a big jackpot you won't be risking much either, and you can get free drinks from the cocktail waitresses while you play.
Use your comps. If you have gambled enough during your stay at any one particular casino you may be entitled to complimentaries, or comps. Casinos offer freebies such as meals, show tickets and hotel rooms to players who risk enough at the tables. If you've been grinding away at blackjack all day ask the pit boss if he can hook you up with a dinner or a free show.
