Pack a tent and tarp to protect you from rain.
Make sure your sleeping bag is tested for cold weather. Even if you are camping in the middle of the summer, nights can be very cold, especially in the mountains.
Bring plenty of changes of clothes and shoes. Nothing will ruin a summer weekend in the great outdoors like wet feet. Bring at least one extra change of warm weather and cool weather clothing.
Bring along a fully stocked first aid kit, in case of any mishaps.
Plan the entire weekend's menu in advance. Select easy to make items, such as cereal for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch.
Make up a big pot of stew or chili ahead of time. You can simply reheat it over your campfire for an easy dinner.
Pack the cooking essentials, such as a can opener, salt and pepper, a cooler, bottled water and cooking utensils.
Bring along plenty of easy to store snacks, such as fresh fruit, granola and trail mix.
Map out a hike before you leave for your weekend camping trip. If you have young children with you, consider how far they can hike before getting tired.
Schedule in some down time. Go swimming and lay on the beach (or river bank) and just relax.
Pack a couple of board games and a deck of cards for some evening entertainment.
Bring along easy to pack outdoor games, such as Frisbee, baseball and touch football.
