How to Plan a Family Weekend Getaway

For a needed change of pace and to escape weekly routine, consider planning a weekend getaway for the family. It can be spontaneous, planned, simple or elaborate. With quality family time and fun as the main goal, follow the steps below for planning the perfect weekend getaway.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a national park. There are U.S. National Parks within driving distance of nearly anywhere in the United States. No matter what personal interests are, find one that is entertaining yet educational for the whole family. Explore caves in Kentucky; see dinosaur fossils in South Dakota, or see Civil or Revolutionary battlegrounds in the Eastern states.

    • 2

Go camping. Camping is one of the most inexpensive ways to get away for awhile. Campgrounds are found all around the country, and most offer fishing, hiking, swimming, boating or just relaxing in peaceful nature.

    • 3

Take a road trip. There are interesting and scenic routes throughout the country, from driving through the mountains to seeing antique covered bridges in the Midwest to Elvis trail in Nashville. Road trips can last only a few hours, or a few weeks.

    • 4

Have an unforgettable time at an amusement park. Once again, there are amusement parks all over the country. Be spontaneous if a park is close to home, otherwise hotel rooms may need to be booked in advance near the parks. Visit one of the many Six Flags, King's Island in Ohio or Wisconsin Dells.

    • 5

Go to a state fair. Often within driving distance, state fairs are an affordable and unique way to spend a weekend. Most offer food, art, crafts, music among many other things that can be an unforgettable experience for a family.

    • 6

Visit a museum for the most educational experience for the family. There are many children's museums, natural history museums and local interest museums that are worth visiting. See what local museums have to offer.
