Family Weekend Getaway Checklist

Traveling as a family is a bit more challenging than going on a solo or couples trip; not only do you need to bring more of everything, but you also need additional items like strollers, diapers, toys and games. However, don't over-pack for a weekend trip with the family. Leave the huge suitcase at home and bring only the essentials; chances are there's a store nearby where you can purchase anything you forgot once you get there.
  1. Travel Necessities

    • Print all confirmations or tickets in advance including hotel, flight or rental car reservations. If you're driving, bring online directions or a GPS. Keep passports or other identification for air travel in a safe place such as a purse or travel bag.

    Clothing And Accessories

    • Check the forecast for your weekend destination and pack an appropriate outfit for each day. Bring mix-and-match clothing and one pair of shoes that coordinates with everything. Adults can get away with wearing the same bottom several times and switching the shirt, but bring extra outfits for the kids in case of spills or accidents. Pack one dressy outfit and pair of shoes if you plan on a nice dinner or a show. If you're traveling to warm temperatures, also bring swimsuits, flip flops, sun hats and sunglasses; if the weather is chilly, pack scarves, gloves, hats and boots. Don't forget underwear, socks and pajamas for everyone.

    Baby And Child Supplies

    • For babies, pack a sling, carrier or lightweight, folding stroller and a separate bag with necessities (bibs, diapers, wipes, baby food and pacifier). Don't forget favorite toys or blankets. Keep older kids entertained with coloring books and crayons, hand-held games or a portable DVD player.

    Health And Beauty

    • Don't forget any prescription medications or other medical necessities. Sunscreen is a must for sunny climates; also consider bringing bug spray if you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors. A small first aid kit with bandages, antibiotic ointment and pain reliever comes in handy for emergencies. Although most hotels have shampoo, soap and conditioner, bring your own travel-sized versions just in case. Pack toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant and makeup in a toiletry kit.

    Miscellaneous Items

    • Don't forget a camera, extra memory card or film to capture your family memories. If you're unfamiliar with the destination, also pack a guidebook or local map. An umbrella or rain poncho is handy in case of bad weather and plastic bags are useful for wet or dirty clothing.
