Determine the type of clothing you'll need based on your planned activities and destination's weather. Bring an outfit for each day, along with undergarments and socks. If you're staying with friends or family, you can wash your clothing there and get away with bringing less. For longer trips, pack a week's worth of clothes and use your hotel's laundry service, handwash items in the sink or find a self-service laundry facility. Bring more shirts than bottoms, because pants, shorts or skirts can be worn multiple times with different tops. One or two pairs of pajamas will suffice.
Resist the impulse to bring a pair of shoes to match every outfit in your suitcase. Instead select two pairs maximum, in addition to the pair you plan to wear while traveling. A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers and a dressy pair of shoes will get you through most trips. Add a pair of flip flops or sandals for summer or snow boots for winter temperatures.
If you're staying at a hotel, leave shampoo, conditioner and soap at home because these will be available in your room. Pack the essentials such as toothpaste, deodorant and a toothbrush, along with any prescription medications or over-the-counter health items you need. Bring sunscreen for sunny climates and insect repellent if you plan to spend an extensive amount of time outdoors. The Transportation Security Administration restricts liquids or gels above 3.4 ounces in carry-on luggage, so pack larger bottles in your checked bag if you are flying. If you bring travel-sized liquids on a plane, they must be kept in a single, quart-sized, zip-top bag.
Leave valuable jewelry and watches at home except for items such as wedding or engagement rings. If you bring jewelry, stick to a few basic pieces that can be worn with multiple outfits and pack them in a small pouch. Bring a winter hat, scarf and gloves for chilly climates or a sun hat for the beach. A reversible brown/black belt can be worn with every outfit in your suitcase. A pashmina serves as a scarf, shawl or travel blanket, and also can be worn as a beach sarong or a belt. Bring a small, fold-up umbrella and a pair of sunglasses no matter where you're going. Pack a travel pillow, book and MP3 player to keep yourself entertained and comfortable on the road.
