No matter what type of trip is planned, there are some items that are absolutes. These include medication, toiletries, first-aid kit, a rain parka, flashlight and identification. If you travel often, keep a bag with basic items always packed. As trips arise, add basics, such as the obvious clothing and shoes. Replenish items as they are used.
Most places in the world have different power plug requirements, so pack plug adaptors for the electrical outlets. Check with your cell phone carrier to find about about changes you may need to make to the phone to be able to use it abroad. Keep a current passport and a list of telephone numbers of people to contact in case of an emergency. Use a money belt for your passport, airline tickets and most of your money.
Traveling with children requires a different packing list. The type of trip helps decide what to take. For example, on a road trip, have such things as wet wipes, paper towels, mini vacuum, toys, books, trash bags, cooler with snacks and beverages and disposable cameras for each child. A pillow and blanket for each child will make it easier to nap in the car. If traveling with teenagers, bring along age-appropriate items, such as iPods, books with young adult characters or challenging puzzles.
Pack a to-do list in the basic-items bag. Your list should include instructions such as "stop newspapers and mail," "schedule a ride to the airport," "ask a neighbor to watch the property" and "notify the alarm company of vacation." Water plants and arrange for someone to water them while you are away. Check the sprinkler system and put lights on a timer. Leave copies of your trip itinerary and important information with someone. Double-check everything before leaving.
