Check List for Packing for a Trip

Checked luggage fees, weight and size restrictions and the problem of just not having enough space in your car can make packing for vacation a bit more stressful than it already is. You don't want to leave behind anything important but you don't want to over pack and pay exorbitant luggage fees either. There's only one thing to do: make a check list. Compile and categorize your vacation into a packing list; plan your destination, how long you'll be gone and your activities, then consider packing outfits that coordinate with other items. For example, if you know you'll be going to numerous dressy dinners while you're away, pack outfits that all match one pair of shoes and one evening bag to leave luggage space available for other items.
  1. Essentials

    • Start with the essentials on your packing list. While you probably don't need anyone to tell you to pack undergarments and deodorant, include them on your packing checklist regardless -- it would be fairly ironic to forget these items simply because you deemed them too unforgettable to put on your list. On your checklist include the following: cell phone chargers, camera battery chargers, contact lenses and solution, glasses, cosmetics, hair products, medications and any other personal essential you cannot live without when on vacation.

    Destination

    • You need your essentials no matter where you travel, but the remainder of your packing list depends greatly on your destination. If you're going to the Caribbean in July, you can rest assured you will need swimsuits, cover-ups, flip flops and other beach attire. If you're going snow skiing during the Christmas holidays you won't need many flip-flops or sun dresses, but you will need to add long underwear, plenty of extra warm clothing, scarves, hats, gloves and boots. Pack enough of each item to last you the duration of your trip plus a few extras just in case of an emergency.

    Activities and Occasions

    • No matter where you go on your vacation you're probably planning a few special things while you're there, whether it's dressing up for dinners or hiking through underground caves in the rainforest. Whatever activities you are doing on your vacation you need to pack appropriately for each. On your checklist include each of the activities in which you are participating and what type of clothing, shoes and accessories are needed for each. If you are traveling for a wedding or other special occasion don't forget to pack the appropriate clothing for that event.

    Babies, Kids and Teens

    • Consider the ages of your children, the activities in which they are participating and any special needs they may have. For example, if your 2-year-old will not sleep at night without her special blanket put that blanket on your checklist, capitalized and highlighted several times. Pack snacks for the trip, games and toys for smaller children, music and movies and books for older children and any favorites they may have when traveling. If you are flying, you are permitted to bring formula and snacks onboard your flight provided they are scanned and passed through the airport security counter.
