Protect your valuable electronics from possible damage in the cargo hold of the plane by taking them with you in your carry-on. Laptops, MP3 players, e-readers, portable DVD players or personal game consoles can provide entertainment on long flights. Plus, your mind will be at ease when you know where those items are at all times. If you are not taking any electronics on your trip, pack magazines, books, puzzles or a newspaper. If you plan on sleeping most of your flight, an eye-mask and ear plugs will help drown out distractions around you.
Have your important paperwork readily available in your carry-on. Never pack your passport, ID and itinerary in your checked luggage. Use sealed plastic bags or colored folders to organize paperwork such as your itinerary, hotel information, important contact information and copies of your ID and passport. Also carry the phone numbers of your credit card companies to report lost or stolen credit cards during your trip. If you are traveling for work and carrying important documents for meetings or a presentation, bring the documents in your carry-on to avoid any problems if your checked luggage is lost, stolen or delayed.
Losing your luggage is a common worry when traveling. Bring essential items you will need to carry you through the next day in case there is a delay with your checked baggage. Carry a change of clothes and any necessary medications with you. Common toiletry items, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant, can be purchased almost anywhere and don't need to take up extra space in your pack. If you're traveling to the beach, pack a swimsuit. At least you can go for a swim while you're waiting for your luggage to arrive.
Never leave your bag unattended when traveling. Be careful where you put your wallet, ID, phone and other valuables, as outside pockets are easily susceptible to theft. Important items should be on the inside of your pack. If your bag does not allow for that kind of organization, consider purchasing a small combination lock to securely fasten the zippers together. Do not purchase a lock with a key, as you will not be able to open your bag if the keys are lost.
