What clothing you pack will depend on where you are going, so look up the temperature ahead of time. Even when traveling to warm climates it is usually a good idea to bring a light sweater as nights may get chilly. Also think about what activities you will be doing while abroad to determine if you should pack things such as hiking boots, ski clothes or a bathing suit. Additionally, it can be wise to look into the customs of the country(ies) you will be visiting. Many religious sites require certain coverings and some countries have taboos about dress.
For international travel a valid, up-to-date passport is necessary. Depending on the destination and length of stay, a visa may also be required. In some cases items such as an insurance card, travel medical insurance and immunization records are helpful. You may also want to consider getting an international drivers license before departing. Pack tickets, confirmation numbers, itinerary information and important telephone numbers. It is also a good idea to leave photocopies of important documents at home with someone you trust.
If possible, exchange some money ahead of time as conversion rates at transportation hubs are often higher. You may also want to consider packing travelers checks and credit cards. It is often helpful to contact your credit card company and bank prior to departing to alert them to the fact that you will be using your cards and bank account abroad. This will prevent the fraud department from freezing your account.
A camera and/or video camera are common to pack for international travel. Extra batteries, a watch and a travel alarm clock can also be helpful. Other items to think about bringing are a laptop, personal music player and a mobile phone. Probably the most important electronics item to pack is a travel adapter and voltage converter as many countries have different plug outlets and electric voltage.
Pack whatever travel-size toiletries you would for any trip, including toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant. For long trips many people enjoy having a neck pillow to help them rest and a deck of cards for entertainment. Consider purchasing a map, guidebook and phrasebook where necessary. For budget travelers, keep in mind that some hostels and dorm accommodations require guests to provide their own sheets.
